Flu Season and Your Skin

With flu season in full swing, you may find yourself washing your hands even more than normal.  This extra washing can dry and irritate the delicate skin of the hands.  Fortunately, there are a few simple steps you can take to protect your skin and prevent damage.  First, when possible, wash with a gentle cleanser, such as cetaphil.  Liquid soaps such as those for washing dishes can be very irritating to the fragile skin of the hands, especially when used repeatedly during cold and flu season.  Second, make sure you thoroughly dry your hands after every washing.  Damp hands can result in further irritation.  Third, use a gentle moisturizer with emollients and ceramides, and use sunscreen on your hands daily.  The hands can often reveal a person’s age due to their constant exposure to harsh chemicals and the sun.   Finally, if you develop a new rash or skin condition on your hands, see a provider at FSC for further evaluation.  In Florida, the hands are constantly exposed to the harsh rays of the sun, so it is important to remember your hands when protecting and caring for your skin
