Can My Baby Have Acne?

Neonatal Acne, or baby acne, can develop at birth or within the first few weeks of life.  They can present as little red bumps that occur mainly on the cheeks and foreheads. There is some thought that this could be due to exposure to maternal hormones during pregnancy. Although distressing for most parents, this condition is harmless and will generally resolve on its own. Until then, use a gentle cleanser, like Cetaphil or Cerave to cleanse the skin. If still concerned, you should always check with your medical provider.

Kids and Skin Exams

Many parents wonder when is the right time to begin bringing their children to the dermatologist.  At Florida Skin Center, we see babies and children of all ages.  Bringing your child to the dermatologist early will allow them to become more comfortable with a skin exam and allow your provider to establish a baseline skin exam.  Your provider can evaluate any moles your child may have and take photos, if necessary, to allow for monitoring.  If you notice any changing moles or freckles on your child, it is best to have these evaluated early.  If you have a family history of melanoma or changing moles, it is especially important to monitor your children regularly.  Living in Florida, we are constantly exposed to the dangerous rays of the sun, so it is important to establish healthy skin habits at an early age, including routine visits to the dermatologist and wearing sunscreen daily.
