The skin is the largest organ of the body with over 20 square feet of surface area. The skin plays an important role in our health such as protection and heat regulation. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. One in five people will develop a skin cancer over the course of their lifetime. Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer is on the rise. The most important factor for skin cancer is early detection. Most skin cancers including melanoma are highly curable when diagnosed and treated early.
A yearly skin check by a Dermatologist is recommended for anyone. Some people who have had a history of skin cancers or have other risks factors may be checked more frequently. Aside from doing yearly skin checks, you should also be doing your own monthly skin checks at home. Become familiar with the moles you have that way you will be aware of any changes. A good rule of thumb is to follow the ABCDE’s. If anything is out of the ordinary, you should see your dermatologist right away.
