When Cosmetic Procedures Go Wrong

We have all seen people who have gone a little extreme with surgery or cosmetic procedures.  The dreaded duck lips and full cheeks that give people a very unnatural look. Let’s be honest, how many of us have indulged in watching the show Botched, which is dedicated to cosmetic procedures gone very wrong?

When cosmetic injections are done by a skilled provider, the risk of getting a bad outcome is greatly reduced, but with any procedure things can always happen.  What if we told you though that there could be a way to UNDO what was done?
Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm and Voluma can be dissolved using a medication called Hyaluronidase.  It is an injectable enzyme solution that speeds the natural breakdown of hyaluronic acid and is used to counteract the effects of hyaluronic acid-based fillers.
It can be injected right into areas that were over treated with filler.

Now keep in mind not all fillers contain hyaluronic acid and not everyone is trained at how to inject this medication.  Make sure to ask your dermatology provider if you could benefit from this treatment.

How to Banish Crepey Skin

Crepey skin or skin that looks saggy, loose, or wrinkled can occur as we age.  The texture of the skin changes along with the aging process due to loss of the support structure of the skin known as collagen, and also the loss of fat beneath the skin. While aging is inevitable, there are environmental factors such as UV damage that can speed up the process of collagen loss.

We can’t stop ourselves from getting older but how we treat our skin most definitely plays a sole in how our skin ages.

  • Sunscreen is very important in the prevention of premature aging and should be applied daily. Theraderm Platinum Protecetion Facial Sunscreen is lightweight SPF 43 that protects against damaging UV rays. Also, Skin Medica Total Defense and Repair has an impressive amount of antioxidants that are paired with a SPF 34 that not only protects against UV rays but also IR(Infra-red) rays that can damage our skin.
  • Besides sunscreen, antioxidant such as Vitamin C & E are the most important prevention to help protect the skin from free radicals and sun damage. Vitamin C+E Complex by Skin Medica contains the antioxidants you skin needs for self-renewal and protection from UV rays.
  • Dehydrated skin tends to show more fine lines than appropriately moisturized skin. As we age the moisture needs of our skin increase. The Skin Medica line has options for all levels of hydration from the Ultra Sheer light weight moisturizer, to a more hydrating Rejuvenative moisturizer, and a Dermal Repair moisturizer for mature skin.
  • Hyaluronic Acid is a natural occurring substance found in the body that work helps to maintain fullness and smooth out fine lines by attracting and binding water. Hyaluronic Acid has the capacity to bind water at 1000 times its volume. HA5 by Skin Medica contains 5 different types of hyaluronic acid to provide instant and long lasting improvement in fine lines and tone of the skin.
  • TNS Essential Serum by Skin Medica is a product that contains 110 different growth factors, antioxidant, and soluble collagen (what gives our skin its youthful elasticity). This serum helps to improve the look of fine lines, wrinkles, skin texture, and tone.
  • For the delicate skin around the eyes, Skin Medica TNS Eye Repair helps to improve the texture and brighten dark circles.

Everyone sweats, but when is the amount of sweating considered abnormal?

Sweating is a normal response to heat, paint, emotions, and diet. Hyperhidrosis is a disorder of excessive sweating that can occur in the axillae, palms, soles, face, and/or scalp that result in occupational, psychological, and physical impairment.
Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis can be caused from a variety of disorders including:  illness, malignancy, substance abuse, certain medications, stroke or other nerve damage, anxiety, etc. Hyperhidrosis can also be idiopathic, or have an unknown cause.
For people who suffer from hyperhidrosis, the amount of sweating can impact their daily life and activities. Treatment for this condition varies. For someone with a secondary cause of excessive sweating it is important to first correct the underlying cause by treating the condition. For those people who have no obvious reason to have excessive sweating, there are a variety of treatments to decrease the amount of sweat produced.
Treatment options range from topical antiperspirants, oral medications, Botox injections, and surgery. Treatment of this disorder can significantly improve the quality of life for someone who suffers from hyperhidrosis.

What Part Does Exfoliation Play in Skin Health?

Exfoliation is a key component for healthy skin, and can help to improve many different skin problems. Exfoliation is the act of removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. A normal person sheds 30,000-40,000 skin cells per minute, and on average 8.8 pounds of dead skin cells fall off your body per year.

Without using a method of exfoliation, these dead skin cells can accumulate on the surface of the skin causing dull and dry looking skin. These dead skin cells can also trap oil and bacteria under them leading to more acne prone skin. The act of exfoliation will help give your skin a healthy glow while improving texture, uneven skin tone, acne, and even fine lines and wrinkles.

Avoid using harsh or abrasive exfoliating products with “beads” as an ingredient. Most often these beads are made up of plastic which can cause micro-tears in your skin leading to inflammation, irritation, and even infection.

Try using a topical exfoliator like NuPeel that uses Natural Enzymes such as Cucumber, Green tea leaf, Grape seed, Chamomile flower, Lemon, and Pineapple. When used 2-3 times per week, you can actually feel the skin cells shedding off as you work it into your skin.

Also, Skin Medica’s AHA/BHA Cream contains Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids that can be used twice daily as a part of your routine to bring new healthy skin cells to the surface by removing dead skin cells, and also has added vitamins and antioxidants nourish and protect the skin from free radicals.
The good news is that these products can be used all over the body, not just the face!

At Florida Skin Center these Exfoliating Products are on Promotion                           the month of April for 25% off!
There is no better time to start exfoliating for healthy skin!

What Your Cell Phone is Doing to Your Skin

  • Problem:  Wrinkles- Constant staring down at your phone when you are surfing the net or browsing social media can lead to wrinkling under the neck and chin referred to as “tech neck”.  Also, squinting at print that that is too small can cause crows feet around the eyes.
  • Solution: Spend less time on the phone and when using, bring the phone up to eye level instead of looking downward.

    • Problem: Brown Spots-  Your cell phone uses radio frequency energy to operate ,which in turn produces a great deal of heat. This heat triggers a cascade in melanin production that is responsible for skin pigmentation, and can produce brown spots or uneven discoloration on the face.
    • Solution:  Use a hands free device, Bluetooth, or speakerphone settings.

    • Problem: Acne- Your phone is dirty. Recent studies have shown that in most cases, a cell phone is 10x more dirty and had more bacteria than a toilet seat (YUCK!) Think about how many times you set your phone down on something and pick it up to put it right back on your face.
    • Solution: Wipe your phone down with alcohol wipes often. Use a hands free device, Bluetooth, or speakerphone settings

Are You Doing Enough To Protect Your Skin Daily?

When speaking about sunscreen use, it is common to hear, “I don’t wear it because I don’t go outside much.” What about the sun exposure you are getting when you are not outside?

A know source of UV exposure is through windows in the car, at home, or at work. It is a long standing observation that people tend to have more sun damage (skin cancers, brown spots, and wrinkling) on the left side of their face and body. This is no coincidence, and research points to UV exposure through car windows.

90 percent of all skin cancers are associated with UV exposure in both its UVA and UVB form.  Glass effectively blocks UVB, and car windshields are specially treated to block UVA rays also. Unfortunately building windows and the stock glass used for car’s side and rear windows allow UVA to penetrate. This indirect source of UV damage is often unaccounted for, and is cumulative over time.

Aside from wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen daily that covers both UVA and UVB rays, another form of protection is window tinting for car, office, and home windows. Depending on the tint selected, it can block up to 99.9 percent of both UVA and UVB rays.
