Treatments for Improving the Appearance of Scars

A common question the providers at FSC often get from patients is how to improve a scar. This would be an easy answer if all scars were created equal, but as we know scars come in all shapes, colors and sizes.  Although there is science to prove that genetics do play a role in how we heal, many treatments are available to improve scars.

1.     SPF for Scars. Sun exposure is one of the leading causes of scar hyperpigmentation or darkening, which can become permanent. The best sunscreens for scars contain zinc oxide, which blocks UVA and UVB rays. We have some great sunscreens with zinc oxide available at FSC. And remember, the sun is strong enough to penetrate most clothing so you should still apply sunscreen even if your scar is covered.

2.     Laser Therapy. At FSC we offer laser therapy to patients for scars that are red or pink.  The laser helps take out the color in the scar and helps it to blend into the surrounding skin.  Most patients will need at least 3 treatments to see improvement in their scars.  Treatments are relatively painless and can be done in less than 10 minutes at any visit. 

3.     Steroid Injections.  Often scars can keloid or become bumpy and raised.  These types of scars can be injected with steroids to help decrease inflammation and make the scar flat.  Patients will generally see improvement in their scar within 3-5 days of having the injection done.  The number of treatments depends on the width and type of scar.

4.   OTC Products.  There are many products on the market that claim to reduce scarring.  The common ones used by our patients are Vitamin E and Mederma. All thought there is not significant data to prove these products do help all types of scars do they do hurt to try.

What is Molluscum

The dreaded molluscum contagiosum, in our office this diagnosis is all too common. 

Molluscums are tiny little bumps on the skin caused by a pox virus called molluscum contagiosum virus. Because it’s a virus, the bumps spread very easily. They eventually disappear on their own, but that can take a year or two.  Because they are a pox virus they often times will leave little divots on the skin similar to a chicken pox scar.

In children who have skin conditions such as eczema, these bumps spread even more easily. And there is a stigma that goes along with having them since they are contagious.

Often times, parents are at a crossroads with how to deal with these pesky little bumps. Many pediatricians recommend not treating these lesions if your child has just a few.  However, if your child has lots of them, if they are in visible areas, if your child has eczema or if they are spreading you can see a pediatric dermatologist for easy, painless treatment.

Congrats!!

We are happy to say that our Grab a Gobbler event yesterday was a huge success.  Florida Skin Center gave away over 50 turkeys in just 20 minutes.  In total, FSC gave away over 100 turkeys to those in need this holiday season in Lee County.

The good news doesn't end there. 

A great big round of applause for Dr. Badia and our staff for winning the Business of the Year award last night at the 12^th Annual Hispanic Achievement Awards.  It is quite an honor and we are very proud.  Dr. Badia was among eight individuals honored Monday night in several categories for her strong work ethic and contributions to the Hispanic community. This is a great achievement for Florida Skin Center. Holiday Season

With the holiday season looming closer, it is a great time to reflect back and give thanks. We at Florida Skin Center want to take time to thank all of our patients and families that continue to come to us for your skin care needs. Without our wonderful patients, Florida Skin Center would not be what it is today.

With the idea of giving thanks in mind, Florida Skin Center is proud to announce that our annual Grab A Gobbler event is right around the corner.  Each year, FSC gives out over a 100 turkeys to those less fortunate during the holiday season.  It is an event that all our staff loves to participate in.  We are even more touched this year, because our patients have also reached out to help donate for this great cause.

The BIG RED BUS

Wish there was something easy you could do to help others or a way to give back to your community?  Well we have something in mind.  Stop by our office on Tuesday Oct 25^th and give blood.  The big red bus will be in our parking lot from 9am-4am.  Did you know that by donating just a pint of blood you could save up to 3 lives? 

Here are some common facts about blood needs from the American Red Cross.

 Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.

·         More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day.

·         A total of 30 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S. (2006).

·         The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints.

·         The blood type most often requested by hospitals is Type O.

·         The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs.

·         More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment.

·         A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.

So if you are in the area on this day or coming to the office for your visit please stop by and give blood.  It’s a great way to give back.

Skin Care Made Easy
